ITC Letter to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy

Dear Mr. Josep Borrell Fontelles,

On Thursday, December 19, 2019, before the European Parliament’s vote on the resolution condemning the crackdown on the Iranian protest movement of November 2019, you stated in the European Parliament: “We expect all those responsible for acts of violence and arrests to be arrested and prosecuted.” To date, none of the perpetrators of brutal violence, torture, and killing of dissidents have been arrested or brought to justice, but instead the number of arrests of citizens and death sentences has increased from week to week .The latest death sentences applies to three young people who took part in the November 2019 protests. These are Amir Hossein Moradi, Saeed Tamjidi and Mohammad Rajabi. According to a report by the highly credible human rights news agency HERAN on June 24, 2020, the first instance ruling was confirmed by the Court of Appeal, without any official announcement.

Dear Mr. Borrell, Dear Mr. Urtasun, the process of dissolving the governmental system of the Islamic Republic has already begun. For fear of its own population, the regime reacts with even more violence, murder and death sentences. Under these circumstances, however, unfortunately none of the European Union institutions concerned with Iran, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with Iran and Iran Task Force, have changed their policies and tried to establish contact with the democratic Iranian opposition. This policy is not in the interest of the democratic countries of the European Union. The Iran Transition Council suggests that European institutions should pay more attention to the views of Iran’s secular and democratic opposition about the country’s future. We believe that in order to avoid wrong decisions by the European Union, it is essential for the institution to exchange views with the opposition regarding Iran’s current affairs and developments. It is hoped that EU policies will change soon and that the needs of the Iranian people and the future programs of the democratic opposition movement will be taken more into account.

The above-mentioned death sentences could be enforced very soon. We, therefore, ask that the dignitaries in charge of European Union’s policy on Iran make statements to the official Iranian authorities, so that these death sentences might be avoided if not annulled. The Tehran regime is trying to neutralize the country’s protest potential through handing down death sentences. We would be very grateful if you took steps to stop this policy. We are available for an exchange of views.

Sincerely,

Dr. N. Barati-Novbari

Aka Mehran Barati
