ITC Letter to Human Rights Commissiomner of the German Government

To the Commissioner of the Federal Government for Human Rights at the Federal Foreign Office Dr. Bärbel Kofler

Subject: Confirmation of death sentences by the Iranian Court of Appeal for  Amir Hossein Moradi, Saeed Tamjidi and Mohammad Rajabi

Dear Dr Kofler,

in your press release of 27 February 2020 regarding the death sentence passed in February 2020 on the aforementioned young men who took part in protest demonstrations in November 2019, you called for an investigation into human rights violations in Iran and stated that “the Iranian people must be given the opportunity to express their views peacefully, freely and without hindrance. The detained demonstrators must be granted the right to humane conditions of detention and to a fair trial under the rule of law – without the death penalty”. According to a report by the highly credible human rights news agency HERAN on 24 June 2020, the first instance ruling was confirmed by the Court of Appeal, without any official announcement.
The country’s security forces had identified and arrested Amir-Hossein Moradi on the basis of secret camera footage. While held in custody, he was beaten and mistreated. After continuous torture, he was forced to appear on the state television and “confess” that he had set banks and gas stations on fire and damaged public property. During the investigation, Mr. Moradi and other defendants were denied any access to lawyers. The other two defendants, Mohammad Rajabi and Saeed Tamjidi, fled to Turkey but were arrested and deported to Iran in spite of the threat of death. All three defendants were accused to be members of the Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MEK). The MEK is identified as a terrorist organization by the ruling class in Iran. The accused had always denied any connection to this organization. Another defendant, Ms Mojgan Eskandari, was sentenced to death on similar allegations. A fifth defendant, whose name has not been disclosed, is still awaiting his trial.
Dear Mrs. Kofler, the above-mentioned death sentences could be executed very soon. We would therefore ask you to make representations to the official Iranian authorities to have the death sentences annulled. The Tehran regime is trying to neutralize the country’s protest potential by means of a large number of death sentences. We would be very grateful if you and the Federal Government would take steps to stop this policy.

Best regards
