Letter from Iran Transition Council to European MP Hannah Neumann

To: Dr. Hannah Neumann

EU-Parliament
Peace and Human Rights Coordinator for the Greens / EFA Group,
Vice-Chair of the Human Rights Committee (DROI),
Member the committees of the Foreign Affairs (AFET)

Dear Dr. Hannah Neumann,

I am writing to you with regard to the new and ongoing round of citizen protests in Iran, whose movement is being violently crashed by the government. Several citizen protestors have been brutally killed. Until now, the only reaction from members of the European Union has been to tell the regime in Tehran to respect the right of its citizens to freedom of assembly and protest. This is neither an effective nor an acceptable support for the freedom seeking, but repressed people of Iran. I am aware that impact potentials from outside the country are limited. Nevertheless, the EU is capable of exerting a lot more than such an appeal only.

As such, I am writing to ask you if the Greens will propose a resolution at the European Parliament, that member states withdraw their ambassadors from Iran as an act of protest against the targeted killing of protestors across the country. We are going to provide the Presidents of the EU Parliament as well as the EU Commission.

Sincerely,

Dr. N. Barati-Novbari
