Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
The Bundesrechtsanwaltskammer (The German Federal Bar) has been asked to stand up again for the Iranian lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh. I am sending the corresponding letter in the appendix.
Nasrin Sotoudeh is one of the most prominent human rights lawyers in Iran. She represented young people facing the death penalty, women, political prisoners and civil rights activists. It has received numerous prizes, most recently the Human Rights Prize of the German Association of Judges and the Alternative Nobel Prize.
Because of her work as a lawyer and her tireless commitment to human rights, Nasrin Sotoudeh was arrested and sentenced several times in June 2018. She is said to be serving a sentence of 38 years and 148 lashes with the cane. In order to draw attention to the rampant Covid-19 pandemic in Iranian prisons and the lack of protective measures for the detainees, she went on hunger strike on August 10, 2020.
On September 19, 2020, Nasrin Sotoudeh, whose health deteriorated significantly during her hunger strike, was transferred from prison to hospital. It is said that she needs a medical procedure on her heart. Without receiving this medical treatment, she was transferred back to Evin Prison.
On October 20, 2020, she was asked to prepare for transport to a hospital. However, she was taken to Shar-e Rey Prison, also called Qarchak Prison, rather than to a hospital. The prison conditions there are said to be even worse than in Evin Prison. Due to the unsanitary conditions and the lack of medical care, Nasrin Sotoudeh is deliberately exposed to the risk of death
Sincerely yours
Maria D. Ghetti
